The Militia of Washington County, Virginia: 1777 - 1835

Over thirty-five years of research went into this volume which encompasses the records of southwest Virginia. Mr. Clark traced the development of the home militia in southwestern Virginia from the Washington County militia through the 70th Regiment and the split into the 70th and the 105th Regiments in 1798. On the frontier every man over the age of 16 was required to render military service. The two listings in this volume contain the officers in one list and militiamen in the other. Clark found these records in a number of places, but the countless hours spent in the archives going through hundreds of boxes of "unfiled" pages of the State auditors records for the time period gave many names heretofore never seen on any other listing. Many of the names came from the "fines" list where a man missed the muster call and was fined for his absence. Each man was required to answer the muster call six times each year.
