During the French and Indian Wars, there were many atrocities on both sides. Layman Draper, one of the countries earliest historians recorded the names of those either killed, wounded, or taken prisoners by the enemy in Augusta County. At this time, Augusta County covered a great deal of the upper part of the eastern United States with over seven states being taken from it in total or in part. These listings included those on the Monongalia, Holston, New, Greenbrier Rivers, Reed Creek, South Branch, Fort Vause, Jackson’s River and many other areas of the east.
Example
“March 19, 1758 - Wm. Clepole, Brock’s Gap, killed; Peter Moser, South Branch, killed; Nicholas Frank, South Branch, killed; John Cunningham & 2 other (names forgotten), South Branch, prisoners....etc...”
