HAMBLEN COUNTY, TENNESSEE
| Return to Hamblen County, TN Books | Return to Homepage |
Hamblen County is located in upper east Tennessee with Morristown as the county seat. Hamblen County was created in 1870 from parts of Jefferson, Grainger, and Greene counties. The county is named in honor of Hezekiah Hamblen (1775–1854), an early settler, landowner, attorney, and member of the Hawkins County Court for many years.
These records are some of the most unusual since the railroads at this time period were just getting a good start in the commerce of the nation. This line was designed to cut travel time from the Ohio River to the port of Charleston, South Carolina by a great deal of time. Cargo would have to travel from Cincinnati down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River on to New Orleans and then around the tip of Florida otherwise. These Minutes of the Stock Holders Meetings give lots of names of those who were willing to invest in this endeavor.
“The stock holders proceeded to elect a Board of Directors for said Company for the ensuing twelve months. When were elected: Hon. William M. Cocke, Thos. W. Turley, William S. Thomas, Joseph Campbell, Col. William Houston, John G. Newbee, William Kincaid, Walter R. Evans, Doc’t Michael Carager, Lewis A. Garrett, Jas. M. Patterson, David C. Cotrell, Isaac Thomas Hugh James and Jessee Evans.”
