Bledsoe County is located in southeastern Tennessee in the head of Sequatchie Valley, the longest valley in the world. These records were copied in 1937 by the Works Project Administration, a government program to bring persons out of the depression by putting them to work with various projects selected by the various states. This is an almost complete transcription of each of the deeds except for the surveyors “calls” which in most cases is from a rock to a tree on the top of a ridge or creek bank. Most of these are untraceable today.

Example

“Page 33 - A Copy of Conveyance from Abraham Swagerty to John McClellan for 5000 acres - This Indenture made this 23rd day of May 1805 between Abraham Swaggerty and John McClellan both of Knox county and State of Tennessee (witnesseth) that for a valuable consideration Abraham Swaggerty hath sold to John McClellan a tract of land containinig five thousand acres on Crow Creek [Sequatchie River] including a large spring.

Abraham Swaggerty (Seal) “
