Created in 1792, Jefferson County is one of the older counties in East Tennessee with most of their court records intact. These minutes of one of the oldest schools in the county that remained in operation, under different names, until the mid-1950s. The Maury Academy was spelled by various terms in the body of this material. It is sometimes spelled Murry, Merry and sometime Mary. The origin of the name is disputed but most likely it was named for Captain Abram Maury, a Tennessee Legislature from 1805.

“This day being 18 day of July 1831. The board of Trustees of Murry Academy met composed of Joseph Hamilton, Jr., Nap’l B. Bradford, Shadrach Inman, John Fain and Hugh Martin. It is ordered by the board that the Chairman of this board pay to Andrew Lanning, Teacher the Sum of Eleven dollars, and that the Clerk of this board issue an order for the Same. Hugh Martin. ...”
