Putnam County, located on the Cumberland Plateau just inside the middle Tennessee line, is one of those counties where migration was important. The main road of travel west from East Tennessee into Middle Tennessee and therefore, westward when through Putnam County before the removal of the Native Americans in lower East Tennessee. This volume is an early tax list that is of great importance as it fall between census years. The old saying is true - the Census taker missed people, but the tax collector didnít. This will locate your ancestors in a district within the county for ease of identification.
