Fairfield County, located in the northern central portion of the state, was created in 1798 from the Camden District. This volume contains a transcription of the 1820 census which includes the names of the head of the household with the free whites in the household as age/sex groups. There is also included the occupation of the household as either agriculture, commerce or manufacturing [shoe maker, wig maker, gun maker, etc]. If the head or those within the household are foreign born, a number indicates how many fall into this category. The last set of figures in this volume are the slaves both male and female as well as the freed colored.

In addition, we have added to the census the John Allen Tharp map surveyed in 1820 of the Fairfield District and which appeared in the Mills’ Atlas in 1825. This map shows where the churches, ferries, communities and homesteads were at the time in the area. The two items together help a researcher find their ancestor in more full detail.
