In 1824, the United States signed a treaty with the Sauk Indians of the Upper Mississippi River Valley which it was thought would pave the way for white settlements in western Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1831, the leader of the Algonquian nation, Chief Black Hawk witnessed whites plowing in the Algonquian ancestral burial grounds in Illinois. Since he was Chief of the Sauk and Fox tribes, he started raiding the settlements and white farms. The militia along with a force of regulars under General Henry Atkinson marched on Black Hawk. They pursued him across the Mississippi into Missouri. Black Hawk was caught between famine and his ancient enemy the Sioux. With some of his most militant followers, he moved back across the Mississippi into Illinois.

General Atkinson with one of his youthful militia captains name Abraham Lincoln, they drove Black Hawk and his small band into the forest of Wisconsin. In the summer of 1832, the Indians were mostly slaughtered and Black Hawk and his two sons sent to Washington D.C. to meet with President Andrew Jackson, who forced the chief to sign over more land in Wisconsin and even into Iowa. The Indians were then imprisoned in Virginia.

An alphabetical listing of the soldiers is given with their rank and regiment.
